The JAB was developed at the request of John Jennings. Jennings wanted an acoustic bass guitar that sounded like an acoustic bass. Many of the commercially available acoustic basses are tight, and punchy, and bass-y, and often very stringy sounding, but lack the deep, warm, woody tone of an upright bass viol. The charge Jennings gave me was to create an instrument that was “like the [JB-30] baritone, but bigger.” The result was the JAB acoustic bass guitar–as close as you’ll get to a true acoustic bass.
The JAB incorporates an unusual feature not found on other acoustic bass guitars – an integrated soundhole port™. The soundhole port was developed both to lower the body cavity resonance and to improve the instrument’s projection–much like a port on a loudspeaker. It consists of a pressure laminated graphite tube and ebony cap ring. The tube drops through the soundhole and mounts into the top (for easy maintenance access), with the ebony cap ring sitting proud of the soundboard. The results are significant–greater focus, separation, and projection of the bass notes.
